Divine Treasures and Measure

“There is nothing that does not have its treasures with Us, and We only send it down in a known measure” ()

This Qur’anic verse offers profound insights into the nature of existence, divine sustenance, and God’s omnipotence. Described as one of the gems of the Qur’an, the verse employs the terms khazāʾin (treasures) and qadr (measure) to articulate the intricate processes through which God provides for creation. It conveys that all entities originate from God’s infinite treasures and descend into the physical world in precisely measured forms. Through this declaration, the verse invites reflection on the relationship between the limitless divine realm and the finite, orderly nature of creation.

ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī examines the depths of this verse, interpreting the divine “treasures” as encompassing all potential forms, forces, and resources that sustain creation. These treasures are not limited to material entities but also include abstract principles such as causation, energy, and the laws governing the cosmos. Unlike finite storehouses, the treasures of God are inexhaustible, unquantifiable, and eternal. They exist in a realm beyond human comprehension, representing the boundless source from which all existence emerges. While the treasures remain limitless with God, their descent into the physical realm occurs in a measured and finite form, reflecting divine wisdom and purpose.

The term khazāʾin thus signifies the foundational resources of creation that exist in an unmanifest state within the divine realm. These treasures are dispatched into the observable world as needed, sustaining life and facilitating the dynamic processes of the universe. ʿAllāmah critiques interpretations that narrowly confine these treasures to phenomena such as rainfall or plant growth, arguing instead for a broader understanding. He emphasizes that everything in creation—animate and inanimate—derives from these divine treasures, which serve as the ultimate source of all sustenance and renewal.

The verse’s mention of qadr (measure) reflects the precision with which God brings entities into existence. Every being, from the smallest particle to the largest galaxy, exists within preordained limits defined by God. This measure encompasses both quantitative and qualitative aspects, determining not only the size or duration of an entity but also its purpose, function, and limitations. Each being occupies a unique role in creation, contributing to the harmony of the universe while adhering to the boundaries set by divine wisdom. For example, human faculties such as sight, hearing, and intellect are designed with specific limits, ensuring that each aspect of creation operates without encroaching on another’s purpose.

The treasures that lie with God are eternal and unchanging, existing beyond the constraints of time and space. When God “sends them down,” they enter the physical world, becoming subject to the laws of change, decay, and temporality. This process of descent highlights the contrast between the permanence of the divine realm and the transience of worldly existence. The phrase “with Us” signifies the proximity and permanence of these treasures in the divine presence, emphasizing that they remain unaffected by the finite conditions of the created world. In their descent, they are measured and tailored to the needs of creation, ensuring that they fulfill their roles within the broader system of existence.

The Qur’anic reference to “sending down” treasures mirrors the act of creation itself. This descent is not a sudden or arbitrary event but a gradual and purposeful process aligned with divine wisdom. Just as sunlight, rain, and wind descend to sustain life on Earth, so does every element of existence emerge from God’s treasures precisely when and how it is needed. This measured descent ensures that all processes in the universe—biological, geological, and cosmic—operate in harmony, reflecting the intricate balance of divine design. For example, the sun’s energy, though inexhaustible at its source, reaches Earth in carefully regulated amounts, enabling life to flourish without being overwhelmed by its intensity.

The duality expressed in this verse—between the infinite nature of divine treasures and their finite manifestation in creation—offers profound insights into the nature of existence. While the treasures remain boundless with God, their measured expression in the physical world reflects the limitations necessary for life to thrive. This duality highlights the transience of material things as fleeting reflections of a higher, eternal reality. By recognizing the infinite source behind all worldly phenomena, believers are invited to transcend their attachment to the material world and focus on the enduring reality of the divine.

ʿAllāmah emphasizes that God’s knowledge precedes and governs every aspect of creation. Before an entity takes form, its measure, purpose, and role are already defined within divine wisdom. This meticulous regulation ensures that creation operates as an interconnected system, where each entity fulfills its unique function without disrupting the balance of the whole. For instance, natural laws governing gravity, reproduction, and energy transfer all function within divinely set parameters, maintaining harmony across the cosmos. This precision not only reflects God’s omniscience but also asserts the interconnectedness of all existence.

The treasures mentioned in the verse remind humanity of the ultimate source of all that sustains life. While worldly existence is marked by competition, scarcity, and eventual decay, the treasures with God remain inexhaustible and eternal. The Qur’anic phrase “there is nothing that does not have its treasures with Us” affirms that all things originate from this boundless divine source. This recognition calls believers to prioritize their relationship with God over transient material pursuits, understanding the physical world as a reflection of an eternal, divine reality.

The balance between abundance and measure also serves as a reminder of the mercy and wisdom inherent in God’s creation. By dispensing resources according to precise measures, God ensures that life operates within sustainable limits. This understanding invites believers to reflect on the intricate design of the universe and their own dependence on divine sustenance. The verse thus becomes a call to gratitude, humility, and trust in God’s providence.

In conclusion, verse offers a glimpse into the profound interplay between divine abundance and measured creation. The treasures of God encompass all potential forms of existence, remaining eternal and limitless in the divine realm. Their descent into the physical world reflects divine wisdom, ensuring that every entity fulfills its purpose within the harmonious system of creation. Through this verse, the Qur’an invites believers to contemplate the ultimate source of all sustenance and existence, urging them to seek the eternal reality of God’s treasures rather than becoming preoccupied with the fleeting nature of the material world. This understanding deepens the believer’s connection to the Creator, fostering a sense of awe, reliance, and alignment with the divine purpose.

  1. The Arabic term khazāʾin translates as “treasures” or “storehouses” but in this verse refers metaphorically to God’s infinite and inexhaustible resources. These treasures include not only material provisions (like sustenance) but also abstract realities such as energy, causation, natural laws, and the spiritual principles underlying creation. ↩︎

  2. Qadr refers to the precise and preordained measure with which God determines every aspect of creation. It encompasses size, duration, purpose, and function, ensuring that all things exist harmoniously and within limits set by divine wisdom. This reflects God’s meticulous planning and omnipotence. ↩︎

  3. God’s treasures include causal laws that govern the natural order, such as gravity, thermodynamics, and biological processes. These laws reflect divine wisdom and ensure that creation unfolds in an orderly, predictable manner. ↩︎

  4. The divine realm is eternal, unchanging, and limitless, where God’s treasures exist in their pure and perfect state. In contrast, the worldly realm is finite, transient, and governed by time, space, and causality. The descent of treasures from the divine to the material world reflects this distinction. ↩︎

  5. The Qur’anic phrase ʿindanā (translated as “with Us”) signifies that the treasures remain eternally in God’s possession, unaffected by the limitations of creation. It highlights God’s transcendence and the divine origin of all provisions. ↩︎

  6. This is an analogy illustrating qadr (measure): the sun’s energy, though infinite in essence, is dispensed in precisely controlled amounts to sustain life on Earth. This reflects the broader principle of divine wisdom regulating creation. ↩︎

  7. This concept emphasizes that all elements of creation—whether animate or inanimate—are intricately linked. Each entity’s measured existence ensures that the universe functions as a harmonious, interdependent system under divine regulation. ↩︎
